Why this race

  • Black Canyon Ultras by UTMB is part of the UTMB World Series (Aravaipa Running)
  • 100K has been a Western States Golden Ticket race with competitive elite fields
  • Well-established, point-to-point Sonoran Desert trail ultra with a strong identity

If you like Western States 100 or Chianti Ultra Trail by UTMB, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • Hydration vest with two 500ml soft flasks + electrolyte tabs
  • Gels or chews for 60-90g carbs per hour, plus salt capsules
  • Light wind jacket and arm sleeves for a cold, near-freezing start
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for the 100K pre-dawn start or finish
  • Sun hat, sunglasses and SPF 50 for exposed desert sections

What you should know

  • The point-to-point course drops overall from Mayer, so train your quads for long runnable descents.
  • Desert trail is rocky and exposed, with little shade; temperatures can climb well above the 10°C morning average.
  • Creek crossings such as the Agua Fria may be high after winter rain, so expect wet feet and pack spare socks.
  • Check the race's official guide for cutoffs, mandatory gear, drop-bag rules and shuttles before race day.
  • Watch for cacti and rattlesnakes on the trail, and follow the course markings closely at junctions.
