Why this race

  • Abbott World Marathon Major
  • Oldest annual marathon, globally televised
  • Strict qualifying standards make it iconic

If you like Berlin Marathon or New York City Marathon, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • 3–4 gels or energy chews + 2 x 500ml sport drink bottles with electrolytes
  • Moisture-wicking long-sleeve shirt + light jacket (12°C start, warmer mid-race)
  • Anti-chafe balm for feet, groin, and underarms
  • Race bib, timing chip, and athlete credentials (must present at check-in)
  • Running watch or phone with GPS + headlamp if finishing after dark
  • Two pairs of double-layer socks and tested race shoes

What you should know

  • Pace slower than 14:40/mile at Heartbreak Hill (mile 20) disqualifies you from course.
  • Water stations every mile 1–26, then every 0.5 miles to finish. Carry your own bottle and plan hydration strategy.
  • Course climbs early (miles 0–10), then ascends Heartbreak Hill (miles 19–21). Manage effort on climbs.
  • Spectators heavy near Wellesley College (mile 13) and downtown Boston. Expect crowds and noise throughout.
  • Weather warms from 12°C at start to 16–18°C by mile 20. Wear layers you can shed and drop at stations.
  • Late descents (miles 21–26) strain knees. Practice downhill running and consider compression support beforehand.
