About

FUGA Penyagolosa Trails is an iconic ultra-endurance trail running event in the province of Castellón, Spain. Races run in semi-self-sufficiency mode, starting at sea level in Castelló de la Plana and finishing at the Sanctuary of Sant Joan de Penyagolosa (1,280 m altitude), crossing towns such as Borriol, Vilafamés, Les Useres, Atzeneta, Culla, Xodos and Vistabella. The event has two main competitive distances: the MiM (60 km) and the CSP (106 km, a Western States Endurance Run qualifier). The 2027 edition is scheduled for April 24, 2027 — exactly 28 years after the first MiM race held in 1999.

Why this race

  • Long-established Spanish ultra (MiM since 1999) with its own identity, run point-to-point from the sea to the mountains
  • The 106 km CSP race is a Western States qualifier and was formerly on the Ultra-Trail World Tour
  • Internationally recognized in the trail-running community, outside the UTMB licensing system

If you like Transvulcania or Lavaredo Ultra Trail, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • Waterproof jacket with taped seams plus thermal layer for summit cold
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for night sections on the CSP
  • Reusable cup and 1.5L capacity: two soft flasks plus bladder
  • Gels or bars every 30-40 min plus electrolyte tabs for 10-20h efforts
  • Survival blanket, whistle, charged phone and race ID

What you should know

  • The course runs point-to-point from Castelló to Sant Joan de Penyagolosa, so arrange your return transport in advance.
  • Check the official mandatory gear list before race day, since kit checks are common at ultras of this length.
  • Intermediate cutoffs apply on long ultras, so pace conservatively on early climbs to bank time.
  • Mild 17°C at the coast can drop sharply near the Penyagolosa summit, which sits at about 1,800m, especially at night.
  • Rocky, technical descents on tired legs raise fall risk, so consider poles and shoes with good grip.
