Why this race

  • MIUT is a long-established, internationally known Madeira ultra-trail with its own identity
  • Formerly a stop on the Ultra-Trail World Tour, so it draws an international elite field
  • Its 110km flagship point-to-point course across the island is iconic in trail running

If you like Transgrancanaria or Lavaredo Ultra Trail, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • Waterproof jacket with taped seams plus a warm mid layer for the summits
  • Headlamp with spare batteries for night sections on the long routes
  • Two 500ml soft flasks, electrolyte tabs and a reusable cup
  • Gels or bars for roughly 60–90g carbs per hour, plus some real food
  • Trekking poles and grippy lugged shoes for wet levada and rock steps

What you should know

  • Check the official mandatory gear list for your distance; kit checks can happen at bib pickup or on course.
  • Pico Ruivo and Pico do Areeiro sit above 1800m, so expect wind, fog and cold even when Funchal is a mild 17°C.
  • Long stone stairs and steep technical descents wear out your quads, so pace the early climbs carefully.
  • Aid stations have time cutoffs on the longer routes; look up the published times and plan your pace around them.
  • Levada paths can be narrow, wet and exposed, so stay on the marked trail and slow down near drop-offs.
