Pack this

  • Waterproof shell jacket with hood plus light gloves and beanie
  • Headlamp with fresh batteries for the pre-dawn 50 mile start
  • Collapsible soft cup and two 500ml soft flasks with electrolyte tabs
  • 8-10 gels or bars beyond aid station food, in a waist or vest pocket
  • Trail shoes with deep lugs and dry socks/shirt for the drop bag

What you should know

  • Marin Headlands trails turn to slick mud and clay after rain; expect slow, cautious footing on steep descents.
  • Coastal fog and wind off Rodeo Beach can drop the felt temperature sharply, so carry a shell even on clear mornings.
  • Total climbing is significant with repeated steep ups and downs; power-hike the climbs and save your quads.
  • Check the official site for cutoff times, mandatory gear and drop-bag locations, and pick up your bib before the start.
  • Yield to hikers and bikers on shared singletrack, follow course markings closely, and never cut switchbacks.
