Pack this

  • Headlamp plus backup light and spare batteries for multiple nights
  • Insulated jacket, gloves and beanie for near-freezing desert nights
  • Two 500ml soft flasks plus 1.5L bladder and electrolyte tabs
  • Sun hat, sunglasses, SPF 50 and lip balm for exposed desert miles
  • Blister kit, lube and spare socks/shoes staged in drop bags

What you should know

  • Check the race's published mandatory gear list and cutoffs; expect gear checks at aid stations.
  • Aid stations can be 20+ miles apart in dry terrain, so carry enough water for long, exposed sections.
  • Desert days near 18°C can drop toward freezing at night; plan layers for big temperature swings.
  • Sleep deprivation affects navigation; follow course markings closely and use a GPX track as backup.
  • Sandstone slickrock and sandy washes are hard on feet; tend to hot spots early and use drop bags wisely.
