Why this race

  • Dam tot Damloop is one of the world's largest 10-mile road races (~40k+ participants)
  • World Athletics label road race with elite international fields
  • Iconic Dutch event with NN title sponsorship, 40 editions

If you like Zevenheuvelenloop Nijmegen or Great North Run, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • Lightweight long-sleeve or arm warmers for a 17°C cloudy start
  • Road racing shoes already broken in, plus a spare pair of socks
  • One 500ml bottle with electrolyte tabs for pre-race and the walk to the start
  • 2-3 gels or chews if racing the 10 EM, taken around 45-50 minutes
  • Bib, timing chip, ID and a small bag for the baggage/finish transfer

What you should know

  • Start and finish are in different cities: 10 EM starts in Amsterdam, finish is in Zaandam.
  • Plan your return trip in advance - shuttle trains between Zaandam and Amsterdam get very crowded.
  • Collect your bib in advance at the expo; race-morning pickup is usually not possible.
  • The course crosses the IJ tunnel, which is warm, humid and has a steep climb out - pace it conservatively.
  • Waves start in blocks by predicted time; the road narrows in places, so keep right when overtaken.
