Pack this

  • Wetsuit plus anti-chafe balm for neck and underarms
  • Two swim caps and anti-fog goggles, plus a tinted spare pair
  • Towel, warm layers and dry shoes for the 18C post-swim chill
  • Flip-flops, water bottle and a banana or gel for after the swim
  • Photo ID and fundraising confirmation for check-in

What you should know

  • Lake Sammamish in September usually sits near 18-20C, so a wetsuit is strongly recommended for the longer swims.
  • Check in early at Sunset Beach for body marking, cap issue and the pre-race safety briefing.
  • Stay on the marked buoy course; roll onto your back and raise an arm to signal a kayak if you need help.
  • Sighting is harder under cloud and glare, so breathe to both sides and look up every few strokes.
  • Post-swim chilling is the main risk: dry off and add layers right away instead of standing around wet.
