Why this race

  • Iconic skyrunning mountain marathon held since 2002 that draws a global elite field
  • Has been a Golden Trail Series / Skyrunner World Series flagship and is known for its huge crowds at Sancti Spiritu
  • Branded race with its own identity that isn't licensed by UTMB
  • Technically a 42K mountain marathon, but classic_ultra is the closest family

If you like Sierre-Zinal or Marathon du Mont-Blanc, you'll like this one.

Pack this

  • Waterproof jacket with taped seams and a thermal base layer for Aizkorri
  • Trail shoes with aggressive lugs for wet limestone, mud and steep grass
  • Soft flasks (2x500ml) plus gels or bars for roughly 1 per 30-40 min
  • Collapsible cup, whistle, emergency blanket and a fully charged phone
  • Poles only if the race rules allow them; check before race day

What you should know

  • Check the official site for the current mandatory gear list and intermediate cutoffs; they're enforced strictly.
  • Aizkorri (1,528m) can be foggy, windy and cold even when Zegama is mild, so be ready for a 10°C drop up high.
  • Expect rocky, slippery technical descents. Wet limestone near the summit ridge needs careful foot placement.
  • Huge crowds pack the climbs at Sancti Spiritu, so keep to your own pace and follow marshals' directions.
  • The Vertical Kilometer climbs 1,015m in 5.2km. Plan how you'll get back down, since the finish is up on the mountain.
